What is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorder is a dysfunction of the jaw joints and muscles that allow you to open and close your mouth while you speak, chew your food, laugh, yawn, and perform a variety of other basic movements. The TMJ, or temporomandibular joints, hinge your lower jaw (mandible) to your upper jaw (maxilla). They can become stressed and overburdened by tension for a number of reasons, including past jaw injuries, bite misalignment, and bruxism (teeth grinding). Oftentimes, when this occurs, patients experience a wide range of symptoms that could cause chronic discomfort and impede oral function.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
Depending on the severity of your TMJ disorder in Morganville, you may experience different symptoms. Below, our team has outlined a range of signs that your pain could be caused by TMJ disorder:
- Lockjaw, or jaw tightening or stiffness, which makes it difficult to open or close the mouth.
- Jaw soreness or discomfort, which can be most noticeable in the morning if you grind your teeth.
- Chronic, lingering headaches that don’t seem to go away.
- Earaches or ringing in the ears.
- Pain that radiates behind the eyes and to the shoulder, neck, and back.
- Difficulty chewing and speaking.
- Difficulty sitting through a dental cleaning with an open mouth.
- Clenching and grinding your teeth throughout the day or while you sleep.
If you notice one or more of these symptoms, call our team at Cambridge Square Dental to schedule a consultation with Dr. Yana. We’ll be able to help you find out the underlying cause of your pain.
Occlusal Splints
After Dr. Yana has had an opportunity to examine your mouth and determine whether TMJ disorder is the result of your pain, our team will be able to develop a treatment plan for you. To ease your discomfort and shift your jaw into a stress-free, comfortable position, we offer custom-crafted occlusal splints. These can be worn as you sleep to protect your teeth from grinding as well, and with time, you’ll begin to notice fewer headaches and minimized symptoms.
