When you have a TMJ disorder, you need to be mindful of how you’re managing your condition. If you’re not careful, you could end up stressing or overworking your jaw joints further, thus making your pain even worse. Need help figuring out what not to do? Below is a list of 5 “do nots” that you should keep in mind while you are suffering from a TMJ disorder.

1. Do Not Chew Gum

If you have a habit of chewing gum, it’s best to break it while you have a TMJ disorder. Excessive use of the jaw joints and the muscles around them is one of the biggest contributing factors to TMJ-related pain. It’s therefore important to give your jaw a chance to rest, and that means not doing any more chewing than you truly have to.

2. Do Not Engage in Non-Functional Jaw Activities

Do you often find yourself chewing on a pen when you’re trying to write something? Are you in the habit of biting your fingernails or chewing on small bits of clothing? These types of non-functional jaw activities only serve to put unnecessary stress on your jaw joints. If you’re trying to overcome your TMJ disorder, you need to put a stop to such activities as soon as possible.

3. Do Not Rest On Your Chin

When you’re browsing the internet or watching your favorite show on TV, you may find yourself resting your jaw on your hand. While this may seem like a comfortable position, it’s actually putting pressure on your jaw joint that could potentially result in a dislocated disc. Try to be more aware of what you do while you’re relaxed so that you can avoid putting your chin on your hand and potentially making your TMJ disorder worse.

4. Do Not Chew With One Side of Your Mouth

You might only chew with one side of your mouth without realizing it. This can result in the joint on one side of your jaw becoming overworked, thus worsening your TMJ disorder. Do your best to chew with both sides of your mouth so that the pressure is evenly distributed.

5. Do Not Delay Treatment for Too Long

You may be tempted to simply try to ignore the pain of a TMJ disorder, but this can easily lead to the condition growing worse over time. It’s better to get in touch with your dentist as soon as possible so that you can start exploring your treatment options and get the relief that you deserve.
